Essential Blog Optimization Checklist: Simple Steps for Success

When we help our clients go public with their website, this is the checklist we suggest for blog posts. The end of this list has some links for information on SEO in general, and are resources that we use regularly when publishing SEO-optimized sites.

Remember to avoid too much high-level fluff and stick to offering actionable information with the intent of being helpful, adding something new to the broader conversation and with your unique insights. If you can, include personal anecdotes with an element of emotion. Quite simply, if there's no story and no emotion, typically there will be very little interest and readers will not remember what you wrote. 

BLOG SEO Checklist:

☐ Plan Your Content with Keyword Research ( Google Keyword Planner)
  • Identify primary and secondary keywords relevant to your topic.
  • Analyze competitor keywords to find gaps and opportunities.
  • Use keyword research tools to understand search volume and trends.

☐ Understand Search Intent 
  • Determine if users are seeking information, looking to make a purchase, or solving a problem.
  • Tailor content to match the user's stage in the buying journey.
  • Regularly review and update content to align with evolving search intent.

☐ Optimize the Length of Your Blog Post
  • Ensure the length is sufficient to cover the topic comprehensively.
  • Avoid fluff; keep content concise and focused.
  • Balance depth with readability to maintain reader engagement.

☐ Focus on Readability
  • Use short paragraphs and sentences for easier reading.
  • Incorporate bullet points and headers for better content structure.
  • Choose a legible font and appropriate text size.

☐ Write a Captivating Blog Post Title
  • Create a title that is clear, concise, and intriguing.
  • Include primary keywords for SEO.
  • Make a promise or offer a solution that the post delivers.

☐ Add a Meta Description to Your Blog Post
  • Write a concise summary that includes main keywords.
  • Make it engaging to encourage click-throughs from search results.
  • Keep it under 160 characters for optimal display in search results.

☐ Link to Relevant Internal and External Resources
  • Provide internal links to related content on your site.
  • Include authoritative external links to enhance credibility.
  • Ensure all links are relevant and add value to the topic.

☐ Add Images and Videos to Your Blog Posts
  • Use high-quality, relevant images to break up text and add visual interest.
  • Include videos to provide a multimedia experience.
  • Optimize media with alt tags and appropriate file sizes.

☐ Use Categories and Tags to Organize Content
  • Categorize posts to group similar topics together.
  • Use tags to highlight specific subtopics or themes.
  • Keep categories and tags consistent and user-friendly.

☐ Write the Best Piece of Content on the Topic
  • Research extensively to provide comprehensive coverage.
  • Include unique insights or angles not covered by competitors.
  • Update content regularly to ensure it remains the best resource.

☐ Encourage Social Media Shares
  • Add social sharing buttons to your blog posts.
  • Create engaging snippets or quotes from your content for easy sharing.
  • Encourage readers to share through calls-to-action.

☐ Optimize Your Older Blog Posts
  • Regularly review and update content for accuracy and relevance.
  • Improve SEO by updating keywords and meta descriptions.
  • Refresh old posts with new data, images, or insights.

Quick tips:
  • Make sure your page speed is fast. PageSpeed Insights.

  • Only use one H1 per page. Use as many H2s and H3s as you like. Consider hierarchy of importance for design and SEO.
